A novel optical flow method for myocardial deformation analysis from tagged MRI

چکیده
Background Cardiac motion analysis can play an important role in diagnosis of cardiac disease. Tagged magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has the ability to directly and non-invasively alter tissue magnetization and produce tag patterns on the deforming tissue [1-3]. This abstract proposes a novel optical flow method for computing the left ventricular systolic dynamics using harmonic phase (HARP) [4] images extracted from tagged MRI data.

Myocardial contour detection in MRI tagged images using short-range correlations of displacement fields
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is fast becoming an indispensable tool for the diagnosis of heart disease. Myocardial tagging is a cardiac MRI technique that allows one to perform a detailed kinematic analysis of the heart muscle. This allows clinicians to non-invasively identify areas of damaged cardiac muscle tissue. Myocardial tagging involves magnetically marking the heart muscle with a se...
متن کاملEvaluation of a phase-based motion tracking method for the calculation of myocardial stress and strain from tagged MRI
Background Tagged MRI is an established technique for the tracking of local deformations of the myocardium. The quantitative assessment of myocardial stress and strain is however a non-trivial task and only few software tools are available for clinical use. The purpose of this work was the evaluation of a phase-based motion tracking method for fully automatic calculation of deformation paramete...
متن کاملEstimation of Eulerian strain from tagged CMR images using band-pass optical flow and HARP
Background Tagged MRI images are usually used for measuring regional measures of myocardial contractility, e.g. strain. Different methods area available for analyzing the tagged images, including harmonic phase (HARP) and optical flow (OF). HARP analysis is widely spread due to its robustness and fast processing, although it fails to measure strain on the endocardial and epicardial borders [1]....
متن کاملThe study of diastole by tagged MRI: are we nearly there yet?
Over the last 15 years, tagged magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the heart has emerged as an accurate noninvasive technique that provides detailed quantitative assessment of myocardial strain or deformation. In particular, it has been used to precisely characterise regional systolic intrinsic contractility of the left ventricle (LV) in experimental models of acute myocardial ischaemia and in ...
متن کاملDifferentiation of viable and nonviable myocardium by the use of three-dimensional tagged MRI in 2-day-old reperfused canine infarcts.
BACKGROUND To limit ischemic myocardial injury, it is important to differentiate viable from infarcted myocardium. Three dimensional (3D) tagged MRI has the ability to quantify myocardial 3D deformation and strain (noninvasively and precisely), and can achieve a true comparison of contraction not only from region to region, but also at different levels of function. In this study, we investigate...
